For individuals who experience challenges with verbal communication, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can be a life-changing tool. However, successful AAC use is not just about having the right device or system. It requires a range of competencies that enable users to communicate effectively, confidently, and meaningfully. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essential AAC competencies and how we support our clients in developing them.
BACKGROUND: Over 35 years ago, Dr. Janice Light made a groundbreaking contribution to the field of AAC by identifying four key domains of competence: linguistic, operational, social, and strategic. These domains have shaped our understanding and approach to AAC, ensuring that individuals using these systems can communicate effectively and meaningfully. Recently, we’ve also recognized the importance of emotional competence.
Linguistic Competence: Building the Foundation 🗣️
Linguistic competence involves understanding and using the symbols, vocabulary, and grammar associated with an AAC system. This foundational competency is crucial for effective communication. At NOW Speech Therapy, we focus on:
- Vocabulary Development: We help clients build a robust vocabulary that meets their daily communication needs. This includes core words that are used frequently and fringe words that are specific to the individual’s interests and experiences.
- Symbol Recognition: Understanding and using symbols accurately is key. We work on helping clients recognize, understand, and use AAC symbols effectively.
- Sentence Construction: Clients learn how to construct sentences using their AAC system, enabling them to express more complex ideas and thoughts.
Operational Competence: Mastering the Tools ⚙️
Operational competence refers to the technical skills needed to use an AAC device or system.
This includes:
- Device Navigation: Clients learn how to navigate menus, select symbols, and use the various features of their AAC device.
- Troubleshooting: We teach basic troubleshooting skills so clients can handle common issues like device malfunctions or software glitches.
- Access Methods: Depending on the individual’s physical abilities, we explore different access methods such as touchscreens, switches, or eye-gaze technology.
Social Competence: Engaging with Others 🤝
Social competence is about understanding and participating in the social aspects of communication.
This includes:
- Conversation Skills: Clients learn how to initiate, maintain, and end conversations appropriately. This involves turn-taking, asking questions, and responding to others.
- Expressing Emotions: We emphasize the importance of using AAC to express emotions, share personal experiences, and build relationships.
- Social Norms: Understanding social norms and etiquette is crucial. We guide clients in recognizing and adhering to these norms to facilitate smoother social interactions.
Strategic Competence: Navigating Challenges 🎯
Strategic competence involves using strategies to overcome communication barriers and enhance message clarity.
Key areas we focus on include:
- Communication Breakdown: Clients learn how to manage and repair communication breakdowns. This might involve repeating a message, using different words, or clarifying their intent.
- Mode Switching: We teach clients when and how to switch between different communication modes, such as verbal speech, gestures, and AAC, to ensure their message is understood.
- Adapting to Context: Strategic competence also includes adapting communication strategies to different contexts, whether it’s a casual conversation with friends or a formal discussion in a meeting.

➡ Emotional Competence: Building Confidence and Comfort 💖
Although not part of Dr. Light’s seminal work, we propose that emotional competence is about feeling confident and comfortable using AAC.
This can include:
- Self-Esteem: We support clients in building self-esteem and confidence in their communication abilities. Celebrating small victories and progress is a big part of this.
- Expressing a Range of Emotions: Clients learn to express a wide range of emotions through AAC, from joy and excitement to frustration and sadness.
- Coping Strategies: We provide strategies to cope with frustration and anxiety that may arise from communication challenges, helping clients maintain a positive outlook.
Collaboration with Other Professionals
We collaborate closely with occupational therapists, educators, and other professionals to provide comprehensive support for our clients. Occupational therapists, in particular, play a vital role in addressing sensory needs and integrating AAC use into daily activities. This holistic approach ensures that all aspects of a client’s development are considered and supported.
Enhancing Quality of Life
Developing AAC competencies is essential for enhancing the quality of life for individuals with communication challenges. At NOW Speech Therapy, we are dedicated to empowering our clients with the skills they need to succeed in all aspects of communication. By focusing on linguistic, operational, social, strategic, and emotional competencies, we help our clients unlock the full potential of their AAC systems.
In conclusion, AAC is more than just a communication tool; it’s a pathway to greater independence, social engagement, and emotional well-being. By supporting our clients in developing these essential competencies, we enable them to communicate with confidence and connect with the world around them. At NOW Speech Therapy, we are committed to this mission, working tirelessly to make communication accessible and meaningful for all. Get in touch! 😀
