At NOW Speech Therapy, we understand that every child’s journey is unique. Our commitment to child-led therapy ensures that our sessions are engaging, meaningful, and centered around the interests of each child. This approach fosters trust and authentic relationships. Also, it creates a foundation for functional language development. Let’s get into it!
Understanding Child-Led Therapy
Child-led therapy is all about following a child’s interests. The child guides our work together. Traditional therapy is adult-directed. The agenda is set by the therapist. Child-led therapy changes that dynamic and involves entering the child’s world of play! This method ensures that sessions are intrinsically motivating and meaningful for the child. By becoming true play partners, we build authentic relationships with the children we work with, based on trust and connection. This trust is essential! This way, our language models are more likely accepted and used by our kids!
Overcoming Challenges in Child-Led Therapy
While child-led therapy is highly effective, it can be a shift from traditional methods. Here are some common challenges and tips on how to overcome them:
1. Shifting from Adult-Directed to Child-Led Therapy
Generally, many therapists and parents are accustomed to highly structured, compliance-based therapy sessions. The idea of a less structured, child-led approach can be daunting. It’s important to start slow. Begin with one or two clients and get comfortable with following their lead. Over time, you’ll find it easier to think on your feet and incorporate the child’s goals into the session.
2. Concerns About Perception
Parents and other professionals might be skeptical about child-led therapy. Education is key. After all, it’s important to know how the sessions will look and the reasons behind using a child-led approach. When families and professionals understand the benefits, they are more likely to support and embrace this method.
3. Lack of Support in Your Environment
If your work environment or parenting partner isn’t supportive of child-led therapy, seek out resources to help them understand its benefits. Our free Masterclass on Child-Led Therapy & Echolalia is a great starting point. Additionally, consider reading books or taking our comprehensive course to gain a deeper understanding of language modeling and child-led therapy.
4. Feeling Overwhelmed by the Amount of Items
In child-led therapy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of toys and materials. Our top tip is to minimize. It can be helpful to use the rule of three! At most, try to have three toys or activities out at a time. This should include two preferred items that the child loves and one new item to introduce. This approach prevents visual overwhelm and helps maintain a calm, focused environment.
Addressing Challenges with Children
Sometimes, children may not respond immediately to child-led therapy. Here are some reasons why and what you can do:
1. Therapy Isn’t Truly Child-Led
The child may not be fully engaged if the therapist is controlling most of the play. Make sure to follow the child’s lead and bring in items that interest them. Avoid forcing your ideas and let the child guide the session.
2. Lack of Experience with Independent Play
Some kids are very used to to compliance-based therapy. So, they may not really feel comfortable to engaging in play with you or their therapist. Give it time. Be a gentle, encouraging, and present listener, allowing the child to explore at their own pace.
3. Dysregulation
If a child is displaying signs of dysregulation (e.g., crying, refusing, hitting, total lack of response/overwhelm), focus on regulation first. Consult with an occupational therapist who understands sensory processing if possible. It is crucial to address regulation before you can effectively work on communication!
4. The Child is Not Ready for Toy Play
Not all children are ready for toy play, and that’s okay. Consider other forms of play, such as people play, sensory motor play, or media. Avoid imposing age-appropriate interests and let the child engage with what they find meaningful.
