Keeping Summer Chill: Rich Communication in Everyday Moments

Patricia Masello

Summers now may not be as lazy as when you were young, but hopefully, you’re enjoying a slightly slower pace. Even if you’re clocking in at work, driving kids around, and planning family activities, schedules are often more relaxed. That means more time for catching fireflies or sipping lemonade. It’s the little things!

In the midst of this laid-back summer vibe, there’s a fantastic opportunity to support your child’s speech and language development. Whether or not your child is currently in speech therapy, you play a crucial role in helping them learn to communicate effectively. At NOW Speech Therapy, we believe that every moment can be a teaching moment, and you don’t need special materials or dedicated times to practice speech and language skills. Here’s how you can seamlessly integrate these practices into your daily summer activities.

Bedtime Stories: A Perfect Opportunity

Bedtime is a wonderful time to work on speech and language skills. When you read a story to your child, you’re not just entertaining them; you’re also helping them develop their vocabulary, comprehension, and narrative skills. Choose books that are age-appropriate and engage your child by asking questions about the story, the characters, and the illustrations. Encourage them to predict what might happen next or to retell the story in their own words.

TIP: Use expressive voices for different characters and emphasize new or challenging words. This not only makes the story more engaging but also helps your child understand and remember new vocabulary.

Bath Time: Splashing with Words

Bath time is another great opportunity for language learning. You can introduce new vocabulary related to water, colors, and body parts. Describe what you’re doing as you bathe your child, and encourage them to do the same.

TIP: Use bath toys to create simple stories or scenarios. For instance, you can have a rubber duck family with different names and personalities, creating dialogues and situations that your child can engage with.

Car Rides: Mobile Learning

Car rides, whether long or short, offer a captive audience for language practice. Play word games like “I Spy” or “20 Questions” to build vocabulary and comprehension. Sing songs together, and don’t shy away from nursery rhymes and repetitive songs that reinforce language patterns.

TIP: Discuss what you see out the window. Talk about the different vehicles, colors, shapes, and signs. Ask open-ended questions to stimulate conversation and critical thinking.

Playground Adventures: Social Language Skills

The playground is an excellent place to work on social communication skills. Encourage your child to interact with other children, take turns, and use polite language. Role-playing different scenarios with your child can also be beneficial. For example, you can pretend to be another child at the playground and practice how to ask to join in a game or how to introduce themselves.

TIP: Praise your child for using polite language and effective communication. Reinforcement helps build confidence and encourages them to continue practicing these skills.

Eating Popsicles: Conversations Over Treats

Sharing a treat like a popsicle is a simple pleasure that can also be a language-rich activity. Describe the flavors, colors, and textures of the treat. Encourage your child to express their preferences and describe their own experiences.

TIP: Ask questions that require more than a yes or no answer. For instance, instead of asking, “Do you like this flavor?” try “What do you like about this flavor?” This encourages more detailed responses and helps build descriptive language skills.
