Autism: What Parents Really Want from Early Intervention

Patricia Masello

At Not Only Words Speech Therapy, we know that effective early intervention goes far beyond checklists and scheduled sessions. It’s about building trust with families, recognizing the strengths of each child, and making sure parents and caregivers feel seen, heard, and supported. That’s why we’re reflecting on some powerful insights from recent research shared by the Hanen Centre: What do parents of autistic children really think about their early intervention experience?

The findings, gathered from interviews with parents of young autistic children, highlight a critical truth—parents want more than services; they want to be partners. This resonates deeply with our values at Not Only Words. When families feel empowered and respected, intervention becomes not just more effective, but more sustainable.

What Parents Are Saying

According to the Hanen Centre’s article, parents emphasized three big takeaways for parents of children with Autism:

  1. They want professionals who truly listen.
Too often, parents feel talked at, not with. They may leave meetings overwhelmed by jargon or unsure if their concerns were fully addressed. What makes a difference is when clinicians pause to ask, “What’s most important to you right now?” and listen—really listen—to the answer.
  2. They value connection and collaboration.
Parents don’t expect professionals to have all the answers, but they do want to feel like they’re part of a team. Many shared that their most positive experiences came from providers who helped them understand their child’s unique communication profile and supported them in their everyday routines—not just during therapy sessions.
  3. They want their child’s strengths to be recognized.
Focusing solely on “fixing” challenges can leave parents feeling like their child’s individuality is being overlooked. Families appreciate providers who see their children as whole, capable individuals—who celebrate small wins, highlight progress, and adapt strategies based on each child’s personality and preferences.

How We’re Taking These Lessons to Heart

At Not Only Words Speech Therapy, we work hard to make every interaction a partnership. We don’t follow a one-size-fits-all plan—because no two families are the same. We offer individualized, play-based, and neurodiversity-affirming support that uplifts children and empowers caregivers.

Our team uses evidence-based programs like Hanen’s It Takes Two to Talk®, which emphasizes responsive, relationship-based strategies that parents can use in everyday moments. We know the best progress happens when children feel safe and understood—and when caregivers are confident in supporting communication development at home, in their own way.

Whether we’re supporting a toddler exploring first words, a school-aged child navigating gestalt language processing, or a family new to an autism diagnosis, our priority is the same: meeting families where they are, and moving forward together.

If you’re a parent or caregiver of a child with communication differences, we want you to know: Your perspective matters. You know your child best, and your voice should shape their care.
